FELASA puts the 3Rs of Laboratory Animal Science 'Replacement, Reduction and Refinement' centre stage. FELASA advocates responsible scientific conduct with animals in the life sciences with particular emphasis on ensuring animal welfare.

FELASA was established in 1978, as detailed in the History of FELASA document.

FELASA publishes guidelines, recommendations and policy documents on topics relevant to laboratory animal science, thanks to its well-recognized working groups.

FELASA maintains relations with national, international and governmental bodies concerned with laboratory animal science in Europe, notably the Council of Europe, the European Commission and European Parliament and continuously seeks collaborations with laboratory animal science associations within and outside Europe, notably through liaison bodies. FELASA's ID number in the EU Transparency Register is: 217329823834-73.

FELASA's mission to support professional competence is supported by its Education and Training Accreditation Scheme, which enhances implementation of the 3Rs, leads to the conduct of ethical and high quality science, and facilitates the mobility of researchers within Europe.

FELASA organises triennial international congresses. These are the reknown and largest Laboratory Animal Science congresses in Europe, attended by over 2000 participants.

FELASA's company registration was moved from UK to Belgium in 2021. FELASA is a Non-Profit Organisation.
